SILCHAR, Jan 7 - Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said that the commitment by the NDA government to give citizenship to the displaced Bengali Hindus coming to Assam from Bangladesh courtesy the notification issued by the Union Home Ministry is a false promise much like the illusive assurance given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deposit Rs 15 lakh in the bank account of each citizen of the country.
Unlike the Congress, the BJP is tempting in promises but disappointing in performance. The assurance by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deposit Rs 15 lakh in the bank account of each citizen of the country if black money is brought back from abroad sounded promising and I am still waiting for my share of the money. Similarly, the people of Assam are waiting for a Bill on Citizenship to be tabled in the Parliament. Let us all wait and watch when we get it. Gogoi said
Addressing the people of Barak Valley at the 125th birth centenary of Dr BR Ambedkar observed by the District Congress SC/ST cell of the party at the Narshing HS School ground, Gogoi termed the Centres non-cooperation responsible for sloppy development of Assam and the North East at large. He criticised the Centres decision to discontinue the special status enjoyed by the State saying that the pace of development in many important spheres has faced a severe jolt because of funds crunch. Expressing concerns, Gogoi said, How can we expect the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao movement to be successful in Assam when the schools are shut down due to non-payment of salaries to teachers.
Further, in a bid to woo the people who turned in fairly large numbers in the meeting, Gogoi revealed his love for Barak Valley saying being a Chief Minister, I had to stage a dharna in front of the Parliament. But Congress has been a party for the poor, the party for all and I will help the people of Barak Valley even if the Centre sanctions minimum fund.
