SHILLONG, Jan 28 - The United Democratic Party (UDP) today opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, saying that it was just a vote investment of the BJP.
The party said it would oppose the Bill and also send a representative for tomorrows meeting, convened by the Asom Gana Parishad together with the National Peoples Party at Guwahati.
The issue of citizenship should be dealt within the ambit of the Illegal Migrants Act and the Citizens Act, UDP working president Bindoo Lanong said, adding that the implementation of the Citizenship Bill would threaten national security.
We hope that some decision would be taken by the political parties at the meeting in Guwahati, Lanong said.
Asked if the UDP was contemplating coming out of the North East Democratic Alliance, the party said NEDA was only a forum to discuss developmental issues and not a political forum.
