Citizens object to official functions at Latasil

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 2 The Citizens Awareness Forum, Guwahat, has submitted a memorandum to Governor JB Patnaik objecting to the holding of functions like Independence Day and Republic day at the Latasil playground.

In the memorandum, the residents reasoned that the Latasil playground was primarily meant for holding of sports events and sports training, and hence should be restricted to that purpose only. Besides, such functions cause immense inconvenience to the local citizens in the residential area and to the commuters, the memo said, adding that an alternative site like the Judges Field which had traditionally been used for such occasions should host such functions.

Taking exception to the district administrations preparations to hold the ensuing Independence Day celebrations at the Latasil ground, the memorandum said that such an attitude undermined the sentiments of the local residents who had vehemently been opposing the holding of those functions at the ground and had also taken up the matter with different authorities, including the Governor several times.

The memorandum said that since the Judges Filed had historically been holding such functions since 1947, and activities other than sports were also allowed there, the State Government should take appropriate steps to hold the Independence Day and Republic day functions at the historic Judges Field instead of the Latasil playground.
