Citizens body to move HC on protection of State land

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, Dec 7 - Nagarik Suraksha Mancha, Assam, will approach the Gauhati High Court soon, seeking protection of the existing geographic boundary of Assam, its forest land and oil fields.

Addressing a press conference at the Greater Bongaigaon Press Club here today, Mancha president Bhadreswar Barman appealed to the people of the State to file public interest litigations (PILs) individually for the protection of the States boundary and forest land before the Naga accord was finalised.

Assam will lose 1,10,188 hectares of reserved forest land to the proposed Nagalim if we sit idle without any protest, Barman warned.

The people of the State have every right to know how many oil fields have been sold to private companies and at what prices, the Suraksha Mancha maintained.

But as per information furnished in reply to a Right to Information (RTI) application, a total of 14 oil fields have been under the operation of the Oil India Limited in the State and of these, six have already been handed over to the Government of India. However, the amount of money paid by companies to purchase oil fields has not been furnished in the RTI information, Barman said.

The Suraksha Mancha called upon the AGP and BPF to snap ties with the ruling BJP Government on moral grounds as the BJP is pursuing a political agenda by ignoring the interests of the State and its people.
