Cigarettes worth Rs 4.28 cr seized in 2016-17

GUWAHATI, April 3 - Officers of the anti-smuggling unit of Customs Division, Guwahati seized cigarettes of Myanmar and Korean origin worth Rs 4.28 cr during the financial year 2016-17.

Official sources said 82,02,000 sticks of king size filter cigarettes smuggled into India from the SE Asian countries were seized at different places in the State during the period.

The seizures were made mainly from buses, various dens in and around Guwahati, the LGBI Airport etc. The cigarette brands include Paris, Ruili River, Win, Peacock, Peacock Classic, Porai, Golden Elephant etc., of Myanmar origin and Esse of Korean origin.

Customs officials said though the goods are brought through air, the main entry point is Moreh in Manipur. �They bring the items to Guwahati and from here these are distributed across the country, including other parts of the North East, besides Guwahati,� an official said. Most of these cigarettes cost less than those made in India. These are also not duty paid and traders make more profit selling them.
