CID rescues 7 persons, circus owner arrested

GUWAHATI, Sept 15 � Acting on a tip-off from a Nepal-based Non-Government Organization (NGO), Assam Police�s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has rescued seven persons, including five minors, from the detention of New Diamond Circus in Merapani area of Golaghat district.

Mithun Chaudhuri, the owner of New Diamond Circus, who hails from Bardwan in West Bengal, has also been arrested on the strength of several charges including those relating to sexual abuse and wrongful confinement.

Of the seven persons rescued, three are Indian while the others hail from Nepal.

Of the three Nepali citizens, three are minors, while two of the three Indian are also stated to be under-aged.

CID sources informed that following a complaint from Esther Benjamins Memorial Foundation, the Nepal-based NGO, a raid was conducted in the Circus premises where it was also found that the owner was running the shows without even registering the name of the circus. The other charges leveled against Chaudhuri include those relating to bonded labour (child), child trafficking, physical assault and criminal intimidation.

The CID has registered a case (CID police station case number 48/10 u/s 344/354/376/506 IPC RW Sec 23 of Juvenile Justice Act).

A senior official of the CID informed that the victims have been kept under the supervision of Snehalaya shelter home and the Government has started the process of handing over the rescued Nepali citizens to the authority concerned in the neighbouring country.

The JourNEI 2010 initiative aims to reach out to the young entrepreneurs and students from all across the country and provide a platform for creating and evaluating new ventures. The theme for this year is Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Northeast India, the release added.
