By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, April 2 - Five days after Cachar Election Offices senior assistant Atashi Dutta Tarafdar was caught red-handed by officers of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department, Government of Assam while taking bribe from a vendor in her office chamber, the All Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi Students Association (ACKHSA) has demanded a CID probe into the incident.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, Rupam Nandi Purakayastha, advisor to the students body said, Like Atashi, there are many such persons in the government departments here, who are neck-deep in scams worth crores of rupees. An in-depth CID investigation shall unmask the faces behind the foul play being taken place at government offices in the district.

He also mentioned that follow up investigation into such corrupt practices could have been done earlier more proactively. Some top bureaucrats might have delayed the probe, giving her a chance to hide evidence which could have been useful to reveal many more facts, he alleged.

The students body leader further stated that offices like the Settlement Department and Food and Civil Supplies Department have become dens for such grafts and the district administration must take steps to nab such corrupt officials.

It may be mentioned that Atasi was arrested on March 28 from her office by a nine-member team of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department, Government of Assam, for taking a bribe of Rs 30,000 from Sujit Chanda, owner of an offset printing press.

Chanda had informed the anti-corruption department about Atasi for demanding Rs 95,000 from him for passing his bill of Rs 2.72 lakh, regarding the printing of papers and merchandise related to Lok Sabha elections.
