CID files chargesheet against 36 accused

GUWAHATI, Dec 18 - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police on Friday filed a chargesheet in the Sub-Inspector question paper leak case against 36 accused, including Assam Police retired DIG PK Dutta and former Karimganj Superintendent of Police Kumar Sanjit Krishna.

The chargesheet was filed before the Court of Special Judge, Assam within the mandatory 90-day period.

The 2,621-page charge-sheet was filed under Sections 120B, 119, 120, 166, 201, 204, 212, 406, 409, 420, 461, 506, 34 of the IPC read with Section 66 (B) of the IT Act and other relevant sections of the Arms Act, Assam Police Act and Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

On September 20, the written examination for recruitment of sub-inspectors in the unarmed branch of Assam Police conducted by the State Level Police Recruitment Board, Assam (SLPRBA) was cancelled after the question paper was leaked on social media.

Subsequently, a case was registered on the basis of a written FIR lodged by then SLPRBA chairman Pradeep Kumar. Two more cases were registered with the Crime Branch and the Diphu Police Station which were later amalgamated with the case registered at the CID police station. Altogether, 26 accused were arrested in connection with the CID PS case, whereas 11 and 3 accused persons were arrested in connection with the Crime Branch PS and Diphu Police Station case, respectively.

The 36 accused named in the chargesheet are Prasanta Kumar Dutta, Kumar Sanjit Krishna, Saroj Sarma, Rubul Hazarika, Dibon Deka, Akhay Chand Baid, Hirak Jyoti Baruah, Kushal Das, Rupam Deka, Rupam Das, Tarani Kanta Banikya, Pradip Mazumder, Devaraj Das, Jaydip Borooah, Manjit Bora, Rituraj Borah, Jitu Mikir, Md Anowar Ali, Priya Nath Gogoi alias Jintu Gogoi, Dilip Gogoi, Abhijit Boro, Mrinal Kumar Nath, Kakumoni Nath, Kumud Kalita, Jintu Nath, Subrata Sarkar, Sukanya Sarkar, Jugami Brahma, Sanjib Kumar Sarma, Kumud Goswami, Pranjal Kumar Sarmah, Pranab Bora, Alakesh Baishya, Bimal Thapa, Ashok Das and Dhrubajyoti Das.

IGP (CID) Surendra Kumar on Friday said that during the course of investigation, Rs 6,26,69,440 in cash, 32 cell phones, 11 digital video recorders, 5 laptops and 10 vehicles were seized. The CID also identified 24 crime scenes spread over four districts in the state.
