By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Aug 27 - The All Assam Chutia Students Union (AACSU)s Lakhimpur district unit staged a protest against the signing of Memorandum of Agreement between the Assam Government and the National Hydroelectrical Power Corporation (NHPC) for starting work at the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydroelectrical Power plants dam at Gerukamukh.

The AACSU unit of Lakhimpur burnt the effigy of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at North Lakhimpur and shouted slogans against the NHPC, BJP and the Assam Government while protesting the restarting of the construction of dam work at Gerukamukh. Later, in a press release the president of Lakhimpur AACSU Jayanta Hazarika and secretary Amrit Das, lambasted the MoA signed by the NHPC and Assam Government terming it a betrayal to the greater cause of the people of Assam. They also said that strong protests would follow if the demand of shutting down of the project over Subansiri river in a sensitive seismic zone is not met.

We condemn and deplore the stand taken by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ignoring the demands of the masses over the issue of LSHEP, said Lakhimpur AACSU president Jayanta Hazarika. Ensuring of the safety and security of the people living in the downstream areas of the project should be the utmost priority of the State government and we will continue to fight for this, said Amrit Das, the secretary of AACSU-Lakhimpur.
