TURA, July 23 - Church leaders of Garo Hills region on Thursday provided assistance to about 150 families of 19 villages in the Rongjeng block of East Garo Hills. The assistance was provided by Church elders as well as social organisations and religious communities.

The relief comes after hailstorms had severely affected several families on April 17 with villages around Rongjeng being the worst-affected.

Each family received three bundles of roofing sheets costing Rs 10,500 per household. The assistance was provided to those families who were affected the most. Roofs of more than 500 houses were destroyed during the storm.

Assistance came from an organisation in Spain Manos Unidas which provided an amount of Rs 15.75 lakh to help the villagers get back on their feet. Incidental costs were met from Bakdil disaster programme fund.

We call upon the people to make efforts towards self reliance through hard work and effectively utilising Central Govt schemes particularly MGN-REGS, said Fr Sunny Joseph Maveli, director and secretary of Bakdil.
