Chinese pangolin rescued, two arrested

DHUBRI, Oct 12 - Two persons were arrested by a team of Golokganj Police led by the OC Abhijit Baruah and SI (probation) Alokesh Nath, in the late hours of Friday night for allegedly trading a Chinese pangolin illegally through Dhubri district.

The police informed that they apprehended Mainul Haque and Jiarul Islam, both residents of South Salmara area, from Uttar Raiur area under Golokganj area, where they brought the Chinese pangolin, from somewhere in Meghalaya to sell it to other parties. Police said that the duo were apprehended, when they agreed to hand over the mammal for Rs 4 lakh.

Mehtab Uddun Ahmed, an expert who also called by police to identify the mammal, said that this is a rare animal and one of the world�s most trafficked mammal, and it is prized in many countries of Asia, particularly China for use in medicine. He also informed that hunting and trade in Indian and Chinese pangolins are banned under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

Police also informed that the rural places of Dhubri have lately grown up to be place of illegal trade of rare animals and most of these animals carried from Meghalaya, which mainly includes many varieties of snakes, pangolins, geckos and owls.

Meanwhile, the mammal was later handed over to the office of District Forest Officer and the arrested accused were forwarded to police custody.
