TEZPUR, May 26 - A book written on China, India conflict, a compilation of various incidents that took place during the 1962 Chinese aggression in and around the then Tezpur town, was released at a brief function held at the Asomyia Club here recently.
The book published by Asomiya Club and edited by noted journalist Manoj Bora and social worker Hemanta Lahkar was formally released by HoD, Department of Cultural Studies, Tezpur University, Prof Pradipjyoti Mahanta.
It may be mentioned here that the book, with 232 pages, has been able to throw light on many ups and downs witnessed by the defence wing of the Government of India and the civil society in the region during the period.
Welcoming the gathering, associate editor of the book Hemanta Lahkar said that nobody can throw to the dustbin of history the incidents relating to the Chinese aggression. The wreckage of the war, its bitter experiences, its historical impact and its political reason, role played by the Indian and Chinese governments during that period have become a subject for recapitulation after more than 50 years of the 1962 China, India war.
Under the aegis of dedicated social workers like Bijit Saikia and Hiren Chowdhury, the Youth Emergency Organization (YEO) that later became today�s SSB was created to help the war-affected people then. �Delving deep into this forgotten incident, we the Asomyia Club took an initiative to publish a book on the subject in 2012. The Ministry of Defence, Government of India also assisted us by providing several photographs and data about the war,� Lahkar said adding that the book is a collection of various incidents that took place during the pre and post war period, observed and stated by various noted personalities of Tezpur like Kolaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Dr Purna Narayan Sinha, ex-minister Bijit Saikia, Hiren Chowdhury, among others.
Meanwhile, editor of the book Manuj Bora said that the editorial board was assisted by retired Director, Directorate of Public Relations, Ministry of Defence, Government of India, Col BD Maitra; Defence PRO, NN Joshi; noted columnist Sanjay Hazarika; journalist Atanu Phukan; Prof Chandan Sharma, Tezpur University and former SP, Sonitpur, Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta.
Releasing the book formally, Prof Pradipjyoti Mahanta said that the book is a database one and from this, the common readers will be able to avail a lot of information regarding the Sino-Indian war. The programme conducted and presided over by Jatindra Nath Koch and Bhupen Sarma respectively was attended by ex-minister Bijit Saikia, Nailini Baruah, Pankaj Borah, Tezpur University. among others.
