China building airports along border: Centre

NEW DELHI, April 29 � Centre has on Thursday admitted that China is developing infrastructure and building airports in the border areas opposite India.

China is developing the infrastructure in the border regions across the Indian border in Tibet. China is building airports at Lhasa, Qamdo, Nyingchi, Ngari and Xigaze, Minister of State for External Affairs, Preneet Kaur said in a Rajya Sabha reply.

Government of India is giving careful and special attention to the development of infrastructure in the border areas opposite China, in order to meet India�s strategic and security arrangements and also to facilitate the economic development of these areas in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttrakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the External Affairs Minister said Government of India is not aware of any Chinese plan to set up army bases in Pakistan occupied Kashmir and North West Pakistan. Government of India keeps a constant watch on all developments having a bearing on the country�s security and takes all necessary measures to safeguard it.

Meanwhile, the Minister said that during the visit of External Affairs Minister, S M Krishna, the two sides reiterated that pending a resolution of the boundary question, both would continue to maintain peace and tranquillity in the India-China border.

It was also agreed to establish a direct secure telephone link between the Prime Minister of India and the Chinese Premier.
