Child sexual abuse cases rising in Mizoram

AIZAWL, March 9 - With a whopping 712 cases of child sexual abuses recorded in the last five years, Mizoram tops the country in this crime.

Official sources said, the Police CID (Crime) recorded 712 cases of child sexual abuse from January 2012 to February 2017. This means that an average of 140 registered cases each year.

Aizawl district child protection unit, Mizoram School Teachers Association (MPTA) and Care World Vision, India are jointly organising a campaign, against sexual molestation of children, in primary schools in Aizawl. Since February 23, the campaign has covered 27 primary schools in the city.

According to Child Welfare Committee (CWC), children are not safe anywhere in the State as most child sexual abuse were committed by relatives, friends and teachers of the victims. According to the CWC report, there were 62 cases of child rape during 2012-13 and 41 during 2013-14.

The cases have increased from 136 in 2014-15 to 182 in 2015-16. From 2016 till January 2017, there have been 147 cases of child rape so far. Officials of CWC said that the number of cases of child sexual abuse is increasing each passing year.
