Child marriage averted in Dibrugarh district

DIBRUGARH, June 19 - Prompt response by a team from Childline here averted a child marriage at a village under Chiringhola Gaon Panchayat within Lahoal PS yesterday evening.

Preparation for a wedding ceremony was afoot wherein a Class-VIII student of about 15-year-old, was about to be given away in a marriage to a boy of a nearby village. Hours before the marriage could be solemnized, the Childline volunteers on receiving specific information, got in touch with the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) and the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and rushed to the residence of the bride.

The Childline, CWC and DCPU along with a police team from the Lahowal Police Station, rescued the child. The minor girl has been kept in Prerona Children Home here for temporary shelter. The groom, an adult and reportedly above 21 years of age, has been picked up by the Lahowal police for necessary action.

It is pertinent to mention here that the couple was in a relationship and the villagers were aware of it. After their relationship became a widely discussed subject in the surroundings, the girl�s family members were reportedly compelled to solemnise their marriage.

Earlier in the day, Childline with the support of the district administration and the Assistant Labour Commissioner here also rescued a nine-year-old domestic help from a residence near Milan Nagar.
