Child labour: Three detained in Cachar for violating rules

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, March 13 - At least three persons have been detained in Cachar district for engaging a child under 14 years of age in construction work at the Katigorah Circle office.

The incident came to light on Tuesday after Circle Officer Jiten Taid recovered the child found carrying bricks for construction work. Sources said that while three persons have been detained, the contractor who was marshalling the team for construction activities under the PWD (Buildings) is yet to be traced.

Meanwhile, reacting on the development, Cachar Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri told The Assam Tribune, It is shocking to learn about the incident. After the child was rescued, the Labour Department was informed and normal procedure would be followed and the incident would be probed stringently. The guilty persons shall have to pay for violation of rules on Child Labour as per laws.

She added to say that there is a lot to be done to create more awareness on issues related to child labour and other child protection measures and appropriate measures would be taken in the coming days.
