GUWAHATI, May 16 - A sudden rise in prices of chicken has hit residents of Guwahati. The price has shot up by up to 35 per cent.
Dressed broiler chicken, which used to cost Rs 200 per kg, is now being sold at Rs 320 a kilo. The price of undressed broiler chicken has risen to Rs 220 per kg.
Similar is the case with local chicken. Dressed local chicken is now being sold at Rs 500-Rs 550 per kg.
Chicken traders of the city have attributed the surge to the disruption in the chicken supply chain. A chicken retailer in Hatigaon area Bhuban Das said, There is no availability of chicken in the market which has caused a sharp rise in the prices here. We buy undressed chicken at Rs 180 per kg now which was earlier Rs 120. The rise in the price is temporary, it will come down soon.
The Kamrup (Metro) district administration had fixed prices of fish, chicken and mutton to be sold in the city. Dressed (broiler) chicken price was fixed at Rs 200 per kg by the administration.
The sudden price rise has not happened only in case of chicken. Prices of several essential items have also increased in the city.
Prices of several items including rice, oil, peas, etc., have increased by Rs 10-Rs 20 per kg. The wholesalers have hiked the prices of almost all items, Babul Ali, a retailer, said.
