SHILLONG, Nov 14 - India�s 1st Cherry Blossom festival was inaugurated by Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul M Sangma at Polo Grounds here today.
Sangma said, Cherry Blossom trees are Nature�s gift to Meghalaya, this gift must be appreciated as these are one of several elements that make the State an attractive tourist destination.
�Tourists looking for a green destination can take a short break away from the hustle and bustle of polluted cities and visit Meghalaya,� he said to the gathering.
Acknowledging the partnership with Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), for joint conceptualisation and implementation of the festival with Meghalaya Government, Sangma said, this start would put Meghalaya onto the global tourist map.
Dinabandhu Sahoo, Director IBSD, who conceptualised the Cherry Blossom festival, said this event would create a number of opportunities for the people of Meghalaya. IBSD is a National Institute of Department of Biotechnology.
He emphasised that collaborations should be developed with Japan so that more international tourists can visit the North East.
Sahoo said that 2017 is the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development as declared by the United Nations, adding, �we must plan for the future editions of this festival in a bigger way.�
Sangma also released a coffee table book entitled �Cherry Blossom-Sakura for Peace, Prosperity and Sustainable Development� written by Sahoo.
