Charan Deka urges AGP leaders, workers to oppose tie-up with BJP

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 14 - Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) central executive committee member Charan Deka today made an appeal to the majority of the regional party leaders and members to come out in the open opposing the move of a small section of the partys top leaders to sacrifice the regional party at the altar of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In a strongly-worded statement here this evening, Deka urged AGP leaders and members to take to the streets in a massive way opposing the party president Atul Bora and senior leaders Keshab Mahanta and Phanibhusan Choudhurys decision to renew the partys alliance with the BJP.

This is the last chance to save the AGP from a bunch of self-seekers. If this chance is lost, regionalism and Assamese nationalism would become irrelevant in the State, Deka warned.

These AGP leaders decision to enter into an electoral alliance with the BJP and withdraw their resignation letters from the State Cabinet is nothing but an act of betrayal. These leaders must tell the people of Assam as to why they have betrayed the cause of the indigenous peoples by surrendering to the BJP despite the saffron party sticking to its stand on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, Deka asserted.

The people of the State are the real masters of the AGP and hence they have the legitimate right to take the harshest measures against those who want to damage this party, Deka asserted.

It may be mentioned that Deka was a leader of the six-year-long Assam Agitation. He had also led the State government employees during the agitation as the secretary general of the Sadou Assam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP).
