Charaipung limping back to normalcy

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 28 Senior Congress leader and vice president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Sarat Barkataky today said that the situation in Charaipung is returning to normalcy and the Congress Government at Dispur is committed to develop the area and ensure that not an inch of States land is further encroached upon.

He also said that the representatives of the State Government, who visited the area, have prepared a roadmap for development of the area.

Schemes worth Rs 10 crore have been taken up to develop the area and the development works would also include construction of the 9 kilometre stretch from Bimalapur area to Teok River, besides setting up of a water tank. A public health centre is also to be set up in the area.

Barkataky, speaking at a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan, here said, Special measures are being taken to safeguard the interests of the local tea growers in the area, who by now have returned to their day-to-day work.

Barkataky, said that the fact-finding visit to Charaipung brought to the fore that a section of tea growers from neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, who were growing tea within the Assam boundary, were trying to assert their rights on the cultivation area, which led to the unrest.

Barakataky went on to inform that the State Government has now decided to give away possession certificates to all the small tea growers in the area.
