Charaipung border tense, NSCN still active

SONARI, Aug 25 � Even after ordering shoot-at-sight at Charaipung in Assam-Arunachal border area, the activities of NSCN (IM) in five Arunachali-dominated villages within Assam are going on in full swing.

The miscreants have built dozens of bunkers in Naharani, Hasirusa, Kamko, Ashinbasti and Tanglungbasti and are guarding them with arms. The local people are passing sleepless nights in the bordering area. Taking the advantage of joint patrolling by Assam and Arunachal Pradesh police, the Arunachali Police personnel entered into Assam areas and have been opposing any strict action by the Assam Police against the NSCN cadres.

Firing: The NSCN activists, fired at the agitators who have opposed the entry of Arunachalis into Assam to purchase food items. As all the four roads entering eastern Arunachal are blocked by the agitators since last Saturday, some Arunachalis were trying to enter through boat at Namsung under Jaypur PS. On opposing the entry of boat through waterways by the agitators, the NSCN cadres open fire from the hillside at around 2 pm today. However, no injury is reported.

Economic blockade: The talk in between district administration and representatives of 12 organisations under the banner of AASU and AJYCP failed here this afternoon. The organisations have refused to withdraw the ongoing economic blockade until and unless NSCN cadres leave the area and restoration of peace and tranquility in the border areas.

Food scarcity: The people of Tirap and Chamlung districts of Arunachal Pradesh are facing food scarcity due to the ongoing economic blockade since last Saturday. The prices of essential commodities are rising abnormally. Rice is being sold at Rs 100 per kg, salt at Rs 25 per kg, while potato is being sold at Rs 40 per kg.

Peace committee: A peace committee was formed today at the initiative of Tirap district administration and Charaideo sub-division administration as an effort to bring normalcy in the border area. The members of peace committee are Tapan Phukan, Nurul Hussain, Debojyoti Bhuyan, Jivan Phukan and Diganta Phukan (Assam), Sanai Aranghum, Tangwang Aranghum, Rusa Raja, Tompa Wangsu and Aaram Aaranghum (Arunachal Pradesh).

Press meet: A three-member team of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, comprising Bolin Kuli and Sarat Chandra Borkatoky, vice president APCC-I and Etua Munda, general secretary, APCC-I visited Charaipung area today. Later, Kuli and Borkatoky addressed a press meet at the IB here and urged the mediapersons to offered all help to the administration in bringing normalcy in the area.
