Chapter on NE likely in school syllabus

By R Dutta Choudhury

GUWAHATI, Nov 6 The Government of India is of the view that the lack of awareness of the people of other parts of the country about the North East region and its people is one of the major reasons for the racial attacks and a move to incorporate a comprehensive chapter on the region in the all-India school syllabus is under active consideration of the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry.

Highly placed sources in the Central Government told The Assam Tribune that the people of most parts of India are not aware of the people of the North East, their habits, culture, etc, which has resulted in a lot of misgivings. The lack of understanding about the people of the North East also results in misunderstanding and very often, because of their looks, people of the North East are branded as foreigners. The Government is of the view that the lack of knowledge is one of the prime reasons for the racial attacks on the people of North East.

Sources revealed that to do away with the problem, a proposal to incorporate a comprehensive chapter on the history, culture and people of the States of North East in the all- India school syllabus is under active consideration of the HRD Ministry. Sources said that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) had also submitted a report suggesting measures for increasing awareness among the people of other parts of the country about the North East to check the racial attacks.

However, sources said that incorporation of such a comprehensive chapter might take some time as the Ministry would have to engage experts to do the job. The Government is not keen on incorporating the chapter in text books without proper study as any mistake would result in further misgivings, sources added.

Sources further said that the move to incorporate a chapter on the North East gained momentum after Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the attacks on the people of North East, particularly on students.
