Chaos, thy name is Guwahati!

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 23 Public activist Prof Deven Dutta today said that unmanaged traffic on the RG Baruah Road near the newly-opened park Shraddhanjali Kanan was creating an extremely chaotic situation in the area in the evening hours.

In a statement, Prof Dutta said that despite there being ample parking space inside the park, most of the visitors preferred to keep their vehicles by the roadside, which was the major reason for the chockablock traffic on the RG Baruah Road in the evenings.

Apart from the State Zoo in close vicinity, the existence of an illegal Sani temple on the footpath which is also largely occupied by petty traders without licence. All this is adding to the chaos and congestion in the area, Prof Dutta said, adding that during traffic snarl it takes 20-25 minutes to commute through the road which actually should take 2-3 minutes.

Prof Dutta said that pedestrians were among the worst sufferers, as they had to bear the brunt of the reckless driving of city buses and trekkers, besides teenaged motorcyclists who ride their two-wheelers at breakneck speed violating all traffic rules.

Taking a swipe at the GMC, GMDA and the Ramki group engaged in disposal of the citys garbage, Prof Dutta said that the private firm entrusted with the task of scientific management of municipal waste was doing a poor job something that amounted to cheating of the tax-paying public.

All it is doing is to lift the garbage from a place and then dump it at another. There is absolutely no scientific disposal of garbage at all even though it talked a lot about recycling the waste into various products, including power generation, Prof Dutta said, adding that the firm was merely extending its timeframes even as the citizens were suffering.

Pointing out that Ramki had entered into a legal understanding with the Government over garbage disposal, Prof Dutta said that the people had a right to know the details of the MoU.
