NALBARI, May 11 - The death of former Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Sheikh Chand Mohammad has cast a pall of gloom in his birth place Mukalmua in Nalbari district.
A senior Congress leader, Sheikh Chand Mohammad represented the Assam Legislative Assembly from Barkshetri constituency. He served as the Deputy Speaker and Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly from November 7 of 1979 to January 7 of 1986. He was an honest politician and had earned a good reputation as the Speaker.
Sheikh Chand Mohammad was born on March 1, 1931 in a farmer�s family of Mukalmua area in Nalbari district. He was the third son of Late Aldar Ali and Late Pulasri Bibi. In 1941, he completed his primary education with scholarship and got admission at Gurdon HS School of Nalbari town. He passed his BA from Cotton College in 1957. After completion of Law degree, Sheikh Chand Mohammad started practice at Gauhati High Court. He was the first headmaster of Raghunath Choudhary HS School for a few days.
As Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Sheikh Chand Mohammad got a lot of opportunities to visit many foreign countries. Though he had settled in Guwahati, he was associated with various social organisations of Barkshetri area. It may be mentioned here that Sheikh Chand Mohammad was the only member present from the Opposition when Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta was sworn in as Chief Minister in 1985. All political and non-political parties and organisations have mourned his demise.
