IMPHAL, Oct 22 London Olympic bronze medallist boxer MC Mary Kom today regretted the media reports which quoted her as saying that she had never received support from the Manipur media.
It is unfortunate to have heard and read in the electronic media and newspapers this morning of the report, said Mary Kom in an interaction with mediapersons along with her husband Onler Kom at the Manipur Press Club this evening. I never said that Manipur media has discriminated me.
Claiming that the news reports which were published after her press conference in Aizawl on Saturday are excessive, the five times world champion boxer said, I am not feeling good after I heard the news report. She added she would look into the matter seriously and take steps if necessary. But she did not elaborate on it.
In Sundays edition of regional and national papers besides TV channels, Mary Kom was quoted as saying that she had never received support from the Manipur press whereas she has been the darling of the national media which evoked reaction from the All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU), an apex body of journalists community in the State.
AMWJU said the international and national media started focusing on Mary Kom only after they came to know the woman boxer had a medal prospect in the Olympic Games whereas the media in Manipur, have been with her right from the beginning of her sports career.
Indias boxing icon also said that she got various forms of offer from different parts of the country, but she prefers to stay back in her native State.
I did not say there was discrimination from local media; but the need on more involvement of media in sports is what in actually said.
I also said that because of my tight schedule, I havent had exclusive interaction with my local media. I know the supports that I received from the local media this far.
