Champ hockey teams felicitated

GUWAHATI, April 3 - The State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare (SLAC) and Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare felicitated the boys and girls hockey teams which emerged champions in the 8th Sub Junior Hockey India National Championship, B Division, held at Hojai (boys) and Kaliabor (girls). The championships were organised by Hockey Assam.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was the chief guest in the felicitation function held at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra auditorium here today. �Our government is committed to provide all possible facilities to the youngsters but our sportspersons also have to be equally dedicated to improve their performances,� said Sonowal. He also urged the young sportspersons to take their events seriously so that they can excel in the national and international arenas.

The Chief Minister asked the State hockey body to organise international hockey championships so that our youngsters can learn more about the game. He also said that the State government would set up a sports university in Chabua.

All the players of both the teams were awarded Rs 25,000 each while the team officials were presented Rs 20,000 each. Ministers Keshab Mahanta, who is also the president of Hockey Assam, Ranjit Dutta and Naba Kumar Doley were present on the occasion.

SLAC member secretary Lakhya Konwar welcomed the guests and players.

Nine girls from Naharkatia: The working president of the Naharkatia Sports Association (NSA), Jagadish Rajkonwar informed that altogether nine players from their association were in the 18-member Assam team which won the title. Rajkonwar also urged the State government to develop their ground so that they can produce more quality players. He further revealed that the NSA did not get any financial assistance from the previous government.
