By CORRESPONDENT

DOOMDOOMA, Aug 19 - Presently, a great degradation has been noticed in the social, political and cultural fields of the State, which obviously poses a great challenge for the students community, to right the wrongs in due course of time.

The above was observed by Nitumoni Saikia, Editor-in-chief of satellite news channel Pratidin Times, while delivering his speech as the chief guest at a freshers social function of Doomdooma College held recently at the college auditorium.

He also said that at present 126 MLAs and 24 MPs were there in the State. But there was not a single politician who could become an ideal for the future generations. Similar is the case in the cultural field too, Saikia lamented.

The meeting was chaired by Kalyan Jyoti Moran, president of the students union of the college. Addressing the meeting, the Principal of the college Dr Prakash Jyoti Borthakur explained the problems faced by the college.

The meeting was also addressed by AASU chief organising secretary Raju Phukan, All Moran Students Union president Arunjyoti Moran, president of the college governing body Ramesh Goswami, president of the teachers unit of the college, Birendra Hazarika and others.

Earlier, the secretary of the students union Hirok Jyoti Moran delivered the welcome address. The meeting was well attended by the students community.

On the other hand, the freshers social of Sadiya College was also held on the same day. Addressing the meeting as the chief guest, Rana Changmai, an Associate Professor of Tinsukia College and former president of Assam College Teachers Association said that even students from interior areas can excel in life if they have a strong determination, focus and unwavering perseverance.

He cited the example of athlete Hima Das and a Tai Phake girl of Margherita who qualified to compete in a beauty contest held in Rajasthan this year.

The meeting was chaired by the Principal incharge of the College Dr Haragovinda Borkakoty. Students who secured first class in major subjects in the BA and B Com final examinations last year from Sadiya College were felicitated at the meeting.
