Chairman of Darrang Zila Parishad removed

By Correspondent

MANGALDAI, June 23 - Following the debacle in the last Assembly poll, which had shattered the dream of AIUDF chief Badaruddin Ajmal in becoming the kingmaker of the State, the AIUDF in Darrang too faced a major crisis as the chairman of Darrang Zila Parishad (DZP) Mohsina Khatun of AIUDF on Wednesday was removed from the post after a no-confidence motion.

Although the AIUDF had formed the DZP with their five members supported by two AGP members and one Independent member, but in view of the alleged corruption and irregularities, ten out of the 14 members of DZP brought a no-confidence motion against her and demanded a special meeting of the DZP.

Inability on the part of the chairman to convene the meeting within the stipulated period compelled the agitated members to make an appeal to the Deputy Commissioner, who as per the rules convened the meeting on Wednesday. The no-confidence motion was accepted unanimously in the meeting presided over by Additional Deputy Commissioner Bidyut Bikash Bhagawati as the chairman of the DZP along with her three supporting members refrained from attending the meeting.

The meeting nominated vice chairman Deepa Sarkar as the officiating chairman till the stipulated period of 30 days after which a meeting will be convened as per direction of the State Election Commission to elect the chairman.

Mention may be made here that in the 14-member strong DZP, the AIUDF had five members elected and with the support of two members of AGP and the lone Independent member formed the DZP. In the election held in 2013 for the DZP, Congress bagged three seats, AGP two, Aikyo Mancha three while one Independent candidate got elected. However, a few months back one Congress member joined the AIUDF and one lady member of AGP joined the BJP. It has been alleged that the husband of the chairman of DZP had acted as the de facto chairman and indulged in corruption and irregularities.
