AGARTALA, May 14 - In yet another move to make Sabroom Tripuras southernmost border town near Bangladesh a gateway to the entire North East region, the Centre has approved of a proposal to set up an integrated check post (ICP).

An inter-ministerial meeting chaired by the Secretary, Border Management, Ministry of Home Affairs, in Delhi on Monday, gave a formal nod to the proposal of setting up the ICP at Sabroom. The project will be implemented by the Land Port Authority of India on the lines of the Akhaura ICP, said a senior official of the Commerce and Industries Department of the State here today.

In the last few years, efforts to provide access to the Chittagong Port for the North Eastern States have gained pace. In December last year, the Ministry of Shipping signed an agreement with the Bangladesh Government to allow transportation of goods from the Chittagong Port. The work on construction of a bridge over the Feni river in Sabroom subdivision has also started.

In the meeting, Kiran Gitte, Special Secretary of the Industries and Commerce Department of the State, stressed the need to have a full-fledged ICP at Sabroom in view of the Maitri Bridge being built over the Feni river. His views were accepted by the Centre by giving a formal approval for the ICP at Sabroom, said the official.

The project will be implemented by the Land Port Authority of India (LPAI). The meeting was attended by senior officers from the ministries of External Affairs, DoNER and Commerce and Industries, BSF, LPAI and the State Government.
