NEW DELHI, Jan 2 � The Centre today said that the quality of water in Assam was a matter of concern.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Union Minister for Rural Development Choudhury Birendra Singh said that Assam and Bihar has been identified as areas of concern for its quality of water.
Arsenic contamination of groundwater has been reported in 19 districts of Assam.
Singh said that information in layers regarding quality of the ground water (pre-monsoon and post monsoon) is being superimposed on Hydro Geo-Morphological maps, which have been prepared to know the availability of ground water for States, he said.
Minister for Public Health Engineering Department Gautam Roy had told Assam Assembly that the government has taken up new water supply schemes in the worst arsenic affected districts.
