By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 24 Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has assured a delegation of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) that a review of the Lower Subansiri Hydro-electric Project would be done on the basis of the final report of the expert committee comprising scientists from Gauhati and Dibrugarh universities and IIT-Guwahati.

Revealing this in a statement, the AASU said that the ministers assurance came after the AASU delegation met him in New Delhi and made a strong pitch for abiding by the expert committee recommendations and taking into account a comprehensive cumulative downstream impact assessment.

The AASU said that the Union Power Secretary, HS Brahma also supported keeping in abeyance the Lower Subansiri project pending the cumulative impact study.

The AASU also drew the notice of the minister of the havoc caused by the dam-induced floods of Kurishu (Bhutan) and Ranganadi (Arunachal Pradesh) in Assam in 2004 and 2008 respectively.

The AASU further urged the house committee constituted by the Assam Assembly to submit its report on the Lower Subansiri project at the earliest.

The AASU made it clear that it would continue with its joint fight with the All Mising Students Union against the mega hydel project.
