Centre to promote dairy farming in Manipur

IMPHAL, Jan 25 - Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Parshottam Rupala who was here on a two-day visit to the state, said that Central Government would take all possible steps to promote dairy farming in the state.

He also emphasised the need to promote proper branding and marketing of the medicinal plants while producing milk for the local consumption in the region.

Union Minister said that Manipur has a huge potential to produce adequate dairy products and the state government should prepare proper infrastructure to improve dairy production.

Rupala was addressing the farmers', scientists and government officials at a farmers-fair-cum exhibition at the ICAR Imphal complex here.

" I will ask the experts, including Amul to share inputs for the improvement of the milk production (in Manipur)," the minister said.

Expressing the need to conserve Manipur pony, a rare breed of horse, in order to save the game of polo, Union Minister, who hails from Gujarat's Amreli district, said that he will take the initiative to promote the Manipuri pony which he felt that it should be a brand for Manipur.

The exhibition was also attended by a number of promising farmers ,Rajya Sabha MP Kh Bhabananda, Vice-Chancellor of Central Agricultural University M Premjit and ICAR NE region Director Narendra Prakash.

He also called on the state Governor Dr Najma Heptulla and Chief Minister N Biren Singh separately at Raj Bhavan and Chief Minister's secretariat in Imphal on his arrival on Wednesday.
