GUWAHATI, Oct 8 - Despite several rights groups not approving of it, Indian Government will go ahead with the deportation of 23 more Rohingya currently lodged in three detention camps of Assam.
The Centre had recently deported seven Rohingya lodged in the Silchar detention camp, back to Rakhine State in Myanmar, which drew sharp reactions from certain quarters. This was for the first time that the Rohingya were officially deported from India.
Sources in the State Government told The Assam Tribune that the nationality verification of all the 23 Rohingya have already been completed and the Centre has so far not put any kind of embargo on their deportation.
�In fact, unlike what many are quoted as saying, the Rohingya immigrants have themselves agreed to be deported back. In such a case, we cannot keep on hold their deportation. Plus, even the Myanmarese Government too has agreed to take them back and agreed on principle that their safety would be ensured,� sources pointed out.
Sources informed that the 23 Rohingya immigrants, who were detained for illegally entering the country, are currently lodged in Silchar, Goalpara and Tezpur detention camps.
�In fact, the Tezpur detention camp houses the most number of Rohingya inmates at the moment. As things stand today, the process of deportation will continue,� sources said.
Sources also divulged that the documents related to the home addresses of the 23 Rohingya along with their written consent, have already been verified by the Myanmarese authorities through the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs.
�We are in touch with the nodal agency in the neighbouring country and the deportation will take place in a phased manner,� sources opined.
