Centre sanctions Rs 23.50 cr for convention centre at NEZCC

DIMAPUR, Jan 4 - Centre has sanctioned Rs 23.50 crore for construction of a regional convention centre at North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC) complex, Dimapur, said Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Dr Jitendra Singh in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

An official release on Friday quoted the DoNER Minister as saying that out of an amount of Rs 13 crore released to NEZCC, Rs 5.72 crore was spent for construction of the convention centre.

Singh said an amount of Rs 41.65 crore, under Tagore Cultural Complex Scheme, has been allocated and Rs 22.50 crore spent for construction of Tagore cultural complexes at Chedema, Aboi and Dimapur in Nagaland and at Raga and Upper Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh from 2013 till date.

The government has also set up tribal research institutes (TRIs)in Sikkim, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram during 2016-17 and 2018-19, which, inter alia, function as a body of knowledge and research and preservation of tribal art and culture, the release said.

The Minister informed that from 2014-15 till date, Rs 86.18 crore has been provided to the TRIs in the Northeastern region to carry out various activities such as research and evaluation studies, holding of training programmes, seminars, workshops, tribal festivals, baseline survey, publications, documentaries/documentation, organisation of exchange visits, etc., to cater to promotion of tribal culture.

The North Eastern Council also provided funds for projects aimed towards promotion of the cultural heritage in Northeastern region, including for allotment of land for construction of cultural and information centre in Delhi.
