NEW DELHI, Nov 16 � The Centre has advised Dispur to be on high alert following resurgence of violence in BTAD areas, while Home Ministry is rushing additional forces to the State in response to a request from the State Government.
Top officials in the Prime Minister�s Office and North Block kept a close tab on the developing situation in the State. The Prime Minister, yesterday spoke to Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi for a briefing on the latest scenario.
The Home Ministry asked the State Government to launch a special drive to seize illegal arms believed to be in the possession of warring groups. It said the district administrations should be sensitised to requisition armed personnel without delay when there is an outbreak of violence.
Union Home Secretary, R.K.Singh on Friday though tried to downplay Centre�s anxiety, when he described the killings as �isolated incidents�. �We have been in touch with the State Government and DGP Assam, who visited Kokrajhar. �We are very cautious.� he said.
�We will hunt down those involved. This is not a flare up. These are isolated incidents. The 65 companies we gave last time are there and it will still remain there. The DGP of Assam wanted more companies. We will be giving them more companies soon,� the Home Secretary said.
�The incidents were disputes because of harvesting, one incident was a case of extortion. DGP has assured the Centre that he will take stringent action on all these incidents.
Meanwhile, the Centre has asked the Assam Government to be on high alert, deploy Army and seize illegal arms to put an end to the current bout of violence.
The North Block on Friday asked the Defence Ministry to make available Army personnel whenever necessary to assist the civil administration in restoring normalcy, following a direction from the Prime Minister.
In its advisory, the Centre said police, paramilitary and army personnel must be put on high alert and deployed in violence-hit areas to maintain peace. State and Central intelligence agencies were asked to be more vigilant, so that they get information in advance about possible trouble and alert law enforcement agencies on time, sources said.
The last round of violence had left at least 78 persons dead and over 4.78 lakh homeless.
