Centre-NSCN (K) truce to be extended

By Correspondent

DIMAPUR, April 30 The ongoing ceasefire between Government of India and the NSCN-K is likely to be extended for another term. The current ceasefire ends on April 30.

Senior NSCN-K leaders including Kughalu Mulatonu and Wangtin Naga are in New Delhi to talk with the Government of India to carry forward the peace process.

According to sources, the two parties are likely to meet on Saturday to discuss extension of the ceasefire as well as the current situation in Nagaland and implementation of the ceasefire ground rules. The delay in extension of the present ceasefire for another term is attributed to non-availability of Special Secretary of Government of India who is on foreign assignment.

The GoI entered into a ceasefire with NSCN-K on April 30, 2001. NSCN-K had met Central leaders on April 24 last year and extended the ceasefire for a year.

Ceasefire Monitoring Group chairman Lt Gen (Retd) Mandhata Singh will accompany the NSCN-K officials.

Besides extension of the ceasefire, the NSCN-K is also likely to raise the issue of starting separate talks with Government of India.

Wangtin said since rival NSCN-IM is already in talks with the Government of India without heeding the demand for collective talks involving all sections of Naga people and other political groups, the NSCN-K will insist on having separate talks with the Government of India.
