Centre moots amendment of IPC

NEW DELHI, Dec 22 - Based on the recommendations of the Bezbaruah Committee, the Centre proposes to amend the provisions of Indian Penal Code relating to �promoting or attempting to promote acts prejudicial to human dignity and words, gestures or acts to insult a member of a particular racial group, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju said in a Lok Sabha reply.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has constituted a Committee in February 2014 under the chairmanship of MP Bezbaruah, who was also member of the North Eastern Council to look into the concerns of the persons hailing from the Northeastern States, who are living in different parts of the country, especially metropolitan areas, and to suggest suitable remedial measures, which could be taken by the Government, he said.

Recommendations made by the Committee include legislative measures, special police initiatives for safety and security of North Eastern people living in Delhi, National Capital Region (NCR) and other parts of the country, educating people about the North East and addressing their grievances of accommodation among others.

Meanwhile, in a separate reply, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhury said that Northeastern States have been requested by Delhi Police to recommend names of suitable candidates from each States for appointment of 10 male and 10 female constables (executive) in Delhi police. Ministry of Home Affairs had requested the NE States to help the Delhi Police, he added.
