Centre for Biotech, TU accorded permanent status

TEZPUR, May 2 � As a culmination of a series of associated research works carried out at Tezpur University with the financial aid of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), the Centre for Biotechnology, Tezpur University has been made a permanent centre as proposed by the university.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed at a function held recently at the academic council hall of Tezpur University.

The ONGC was represented by S Choudhury group general manager and head, ONGC Academy, Dehradun while Tezpur University was represented by Vice-Chancellor Prof Mihir Kanti Choudhuri and other senior officials.

The centre which was established as a project in 1999 with an initial grant of Rs. 1, 88, 95,400 has been given an additional amount of Rs. 50 lakh to be added to its existing corpus for running the centre on a permanent basis.

It is worthmentioning that the centre has so far made remarkable progress in carrying out research works related to bioremediation of contaminanted crude oil and microbially enhanced oil recovery.

It has also been organising training programmes to develop skilled manpower in petroleum biotechnology. In order to facilitate such activities, the centre has created all necessary infrastructures including sophisticated equipment like HPLC, GC-MS, Tensiometer, fermenter, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, etc.
