GUWAHATI, Jan 8 - Strongly condemning the Union government�s move to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 in the Lok Sabha totally ignoring the widespread protest in Assam and the entire North East, the Asam Sahitya Sabha today said it would convene a meeting of all the literary bodies of different tribes of the State to discuss the crisis situation and to decide the next course of action.
�The Sabha, being a part of the historic Assam Movement, is resolute on the demand of total implementation of Clause VI of the Assam Accord. Despite its tall promises of protecting the interest of the indigenous people of Assam, the Union government cheated us by passing the Bill in a hasty manner. The Union and the State governments are responsible for today�s situation in Assam,� Sabha president Paramananda Rajbongshi said.
The literary body also argued that the secular nature of the Indian Constitution is the basis of Indian democracy and saffronisation of democracy is not just unfortunate but also harmful to the country.
Urging all sections of people to maintain restraint to avoid any untoward situation, the Sabha said that the unscrupulous sections of society should not be allowed to take advantage of the situation.
�To discuss the situation after the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, ST status to the six communities and the challenges before the Assamese language and other indigenous languages of Assam, we will convene a meeting of all the indigenous literary bodies on January 12 from 11 am at the Bhagawati Prasad Barua Bhawan of the Asam Sahitya Sabha,� Sabha general secretary Padum Rajkhowa said.
The decisions to be taken at the meeting of the indigenous literary bodies would also be discussed with different ethnic and student organisations of the State.
