Centre biased against Assam, says Cong

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 27 - Alleging that the Centre has done little to address the woes of the flood-hit people of Assam, the Congress today hit out at the BJP-led government at the Centre for being biased when it comes to matters like distribution of aid amongst the States.

The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) slammed the Centre for ignoring the miseries of the flood-hit people of Assam and demanded a special flood relief package for the State. Given the magnitude of the problem in Assam, it is pertinent that the Centre provide a special flood relief package for the State. We insist that the Centre extend a flood relief package worth Rs 1,000 crore for Assam immediately, demanded CLP leader Debobrata Saikia.

Addressing media-persons soon after the adjournment of the Assam Assembly, Saikia voiced his concern over the worsening flood situation in the State and said that despite repeated pleas to the Centre for more aid to tide over the perennial problem in the State, these requests have been ignored.

Unfortunately the Centre has turned a blind eye towards the miseries of Assam. When it comes to distributing aid, the BJP government chooses to take a biased stand. It declares flood in Jammu and Kashmir as national level disaster and provides liberal assistance to the State. But in their opinion, flood in Assam, which has wrecked havoc with life and property, does not deserve to be taken seriously, rued Saikia.

Saikia further alleged that during the UPA regime there was a provision for providing interim flood relief which the present BJP government has withdrawn.

On the other hand, Deputy Leader of CLP Rakibul Hussain informed that Congress representatives and members would be cooperating with the district administration in flood relief operations. He said that Congress MLAs will start visiting their respective constituencies from today and take stock of the flood situation.

The CLP has also called upon the government to ensure supply of enough animal fodder at this time of crisis.
