BARPETA, June 13 - With the deadline for publication of final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) approaching, Register General of India (RGI) Sri Sailesh reviewed the progress of the ongoing NRC update here this evening.
The RGI, accompanied by Satyendra Garg, Joint Secretary (Northeast), Home; Prateek Hajela, State Coordinator of NRC; LS Changsan, Principal Secretary, Home and Political, Assam; and Mukesh Agarwala, ADGP (Law and Order), held a closed-door meeting at the deputy commissioner�s office here.
The meeting was attended by the deputy commissioners and police superintendents of Barpeta, Nalbari, Baksa, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Kokrajhar and Dhubri.
Later speaking to media, the RGI said the process of updating of the much awaited citizenship document is going on in the right direction and the final draft will be published on June 30. He said everything is being done according to the existing laws and guidelines, and there would be no any deviation from rules under any circumstances.
Sri Sailesh said the deputy commissioners as well as other officials and the public have cooperated in the process very well and there is not any apprehension of any error in the updated citizenship document.
Satyendra Garg expressed satisfaction over the law and order situation and said that additional force will be sent to the State if required.
Earlier, Congress MLAs from Barpeta district � Abdul Khalek, Sherman Ali Ahmed and Jakir Hussain Sikdar met the RGI and handed over a memorandum to him. They urged upon the RGI to ensure that no genuine Indian citizen is left out and foreigners included in the NRC.
A similar meeting will be held at Nagaon tomorrow.
