DERGAON, Jan 7 - Hundreds of well-wishers attended the centenary celebration of Ganesh Chandra Hazarika, who is a noted freedom fighter, teacher and follower of Sankari culture, besides being a prominent progressive farmer, at the Bapuji Mandir here on Friday.
Hazarika is considered one among the trinity of Dergaon Anchalik Naam Kirtan and Sankari Kala Kristi Bikash Samiti. He retired as the Headmaster of Dergaon Kamargaon Senior Basic School and is a resident of Afuagaon here. He is fortunate to have completed 100 glorious winters.
The programme, organised by the Samiti in association with the family members of Hazarika, several organisations and residents of Afuagaon with a day-long programme, was attended by a large gathering, including senior citizens, women and children.
Initiating the programme with floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, retired Vice Principal of DKD College here, Prabhat Chandra Mahanta explained the utility of non-violence espoused by the Father of the Nation. He also explained the stellar contributions of the centenarian freedom fighter and teacher.
The open meeting which was chaired by Samudra Dowerah and moderated by Bubul Chandra Borah, was inaugurated by social worker Atul Goswami.
A volume titled Abhinandan Grantha edited by Benudhar Bora and Prafulla Bora, which is a collection of biography of the centenarian written by several individuals, was released by educationist Biren Thakur.
Delivering his speech as the appointed speaker, noted writer Dr Ajit Baruah of Golaghat explained in detail the role of Golaghat during the Independence Struggle with special emphasis on Dergaon.
The programme was also attended by Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Dhiren Hazarika, former MLA of Dergaon Arati Hazarika Kachari, teacher of JB College Dr Indreswar Das and SBI Manager Nandita Dutta, among others.
The freedom fighter-cum-teacher was felicitated by the organisers along with the residents of Afuagaon, Lekhika Samaroh Samiti, frontline nature organisation Aashray along with several prominent individuals and organisations.
Replying to the felicitation, the centenarian teacher expressed his gratitude to the organisations and individuals who felicitated him.
