CBI probe demanded into scholarship scam

GUWAHATI, Feb 28 - The All India Tribal Students� Union, Assam, today demanded a CBI inquiry into the alleged scam involving around Rs 1,000 crores of the scholarship amounts of the plains tribal students of the State that occurred during the previous regime.

The students' body has also called for steps to bring former Minister of Welfare of Plains Tribe and Other Backward Classes (WPT & OBC) Department Sumitra Patir under the ambit of the investigation in this connection.

A section of the powerful people, who were involved in the activities of the WPT & OBC Department, embezzled crores of rupees meant for the scholarship of the Plains Tribes' students and procured movable and immovable property in an enviable manner during the reign of the Congress in the past about 15 years, alleged the students' body.

It has threatened steps to move the Supreme Court and a mass agitation in support of the above demand.
