Cattle thieves beaten up on suspicion of child lifting, many including cops hurt

HAILAKANDI, Oct 12 - Massive operation is going on at Laskarbazaar in Nitainagar village of Hailakandi district following yesterday�s mob violence in which several security personnel were injured, informed the Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath.

Till the filing of this report, six persons have been picked up so far for interrogation in connection with their involvement in the lynching. On the other hand, nine persons including a policeman were arrested this afternoon on the basis of the FIRs filed by the local people and police and were sent to judicial custody. Of the nine arrested, six persons who were alleged to be kidnappers were rescued by the Assam Police and CRPF personnel amidst mob violence and three others escaped after allegedly taking a buffalo from the market on Friday night. They were later spotted in Panchgram area of the district.

SP Pabindra Kumar Nath is investigating the case. Laskarbazar is a weekly cattle market and is situated nearly 13 km from Hailakandi town.

All the nine persons including a police constable of Sonai police station of Cachar district came to Laskarbazaar in Nitainagar last evening and allegedly took away a buffalo. Three of them left the market with the buffalo and the rest were looking for more buffaloes to steal when people suspecting them to be child lifters rounded them up and lynched them. The policeman, Jamil Hussain (30) was not in uniform and was leading the nine-member gang from Sonai. A police team from Hailakandi which went to rescue them was also beaten up by the irate mob. Twelve policemen including the OCs of Hailakandi and Algapur were injured. Four of the injured were admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital and OC of Hailakandi Sadar police station, Hemanta Kumar Das was today shifted to GNRC, Guwahati for further treatment. The irate mob also burnt the vehicle they had brought and also damaged the vehicle of a Deputy Superintendent of Police. Some local villagers also received injuries when they tried to save the police team of Hailakandi.

The nine arrested persons are Jamil Hussain, a constable of the 15th Assam Police Battalion of Sonai in Cachar district, who is a resident of Ratabari in Karimganj district. The others are Firuz Ahmed Laskar, Mehedi Hasan Choudhury, Sebul Hussain Laskar, Zahirul Islam Barbhuiya, Afjal Hussain Laskar, Sofique Uddin Laskar, Noshad Hussain Mazumdar and Rubal Ahmed Choudhury. All of them are residents of Sonai.

They were arrested in Hailakandi police station case number 122/19 under Section 379 IPC and case number 1131/19 under section 341/364/511/34 IPC.
