Cattle smuggling bids foiled

TURA, April 2 - Cattle smuggling has become a menace for Meghalaya. The Border Security Force (BSF), which has been instrumental in curbing the meance to a great extent, foiled fresh bids in three districts of the State.

According to a BSF release, the troops deployed at Lyngkhat, East Khasi Hills district, foiled the attempt of smugglers and prevented 34 cattle from being smuggled to Bangladesh. Lyngkhat area is notorious for smuggling of cattle, where such attempts have been obstructed many a times by the BSF.

�We have been operating in close coordination with police for foiling such bids of cattle smuggling thorough the border areas. An FIR has been lodged against a woman involved in smuggling of cattle but she managed to flee from the spot, said the release.

In another incident, the BSF troops deployed at Rajai, South West Khasi Hills district seized four horses while being smuggled to Bangladesh.

�Smuggling of horses takes place in Gumaghat, Kakergora and Dangar areas. During 2015, a total of 68 horses were stopped from being smuggled to Bangladesh. The figure during 2016 had reached 23 already,� added the release.
