DHEMAJI, Sept 3 - Sensation prevails in Dhemaji district over the suicide of police sub-inspector Nipan Nath, who shot himself with his service pistol at his residence on August 30 morning.

The police officer, who hailed from Rangiya in Nalbari district, had joined Assam Police in 2017 and was posted at the Sissiborgaon OutPost (OP) as Sub-Inspector.

Naths family members, who have termed the case as abetment of suicide, have lodged a complaint against Sissiborgaon OP in-charge (IC) Padmeswar Borkataki demanding proper investigation to unearth the facts behind the mysterious death.

Earlier too, a section of the local people of Sissiborgaon had submitted a written complaint before the Dhemaji Superintendent of Police alleging that OC Borkataki misused his power and manipulated criminal cases for his personal gain.

When asked about departmental action, Dhemaji Superintendent of Police (SP) VV Rakesh Reddy said investigation of the case has been assigned to an Additional SP and the investigation would take some weeks.

I have removed the controversial OC from Sissiborgaon OP and kept him in police reserve for the sake of a free and fair inquiry. A case has been registered against Borkataki under Section 306 IPC at Silapathar PS and departmental action would be initiated if found guilty, said SP Reddy at Dhemaji today.

Reddy further informed that the Deputy SP (HQ) of the district has been asked to inquire into the public allegations against Borkataki. Senior Sub-Inspector of Police Mohendra Saikia, has been posted to Sissiborgaon OP as its new incharge.
