Case registered against doctor for half-done surgery in Jorhat

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

JORHAT, Aug 18 - In a bizarre and shocking incident, a 33-year-old woman patient from Mudoi Beel area of Majuli island district on Thursday was reportedly left on the operating table at a private hospital (KG Nursing Home) here with her abdomen cut open and then stitched up, but without a tumour inside being removed.

A case (No.1941/2018) was registered against surgeon Siddhartha Buragohain at the Jorhat Police Station yesterday under Sections 166 (B) (Punishment for non-treatment of a victim), 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 307 (Attempt to murder) of the IPC after the patients son Ananta Kalita lodged an FIR.

A police source told this Correspondent that the surgeon had informed patient Rupa Kalita and her attendant that she would have to be operated upon as there was a tumour inside her abdomen.

The source claimed that the surgeon without conducting any tests carried out the operation.

After the abdomen was cut open, the doctor allegedly told family members of the patient that the surgery was beyond his capabilities and so he had stitched up her stomach without removing the tumour and advised them to take her to Guwahati for the surgery.

Subsequently, Buragohain left the private nursing home and went to his chamber located near Baruah Chariali here.

Relatives of the woman on coming to know about the incident created a ruckus and informed senior police and district administration officials. Thereafter, a police team arrived at the nursing home along with an executive magistrate and brought the situation under control.

Subsequently, police picked up Dr Buragohain from his chamber. However, he was released after he gave a written undertaking that he would bear all expenses related to Rupas treatment.

The source said that the patient who belongs to a poor family was reportedly provided medical care by the private hospital under the instructions of the district administration and was shifted to Guwahati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) yesterday.

A Jorhat Medical College and Hospital source said that Dr Siddhartha Buragohain was earlier posted at the JMCH and was later transferred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital following a complaint of malpractice. He was subsequently suspended from service.

A police official said that investigation was on in the case and action would be taken as per provision of law.
