HAILAKANDI, July 22 - The Hailakandi Municipal Board filed an FIR in a case when some local people manhandled workers of the board while the latter were dumping garbage at the Kuchila trenching ground.

The Executive Officer of Hailakandi Municipal Board Prodip Timung informed that he had asked the Superintendent of Police to register a case against eight accused persons and a group of 50 local people armed with lethal weapons for threatening two truck drivers and a muster roll worker of the board of dire consequences and hurling abusive words while they were dumping garbage at the boards own trenching ground at around 10 am on Thursday.

The miscreants also pelted stones on the workers of the municipal board and damaged the windscreen of a vehicle. One worker was injured during stone pelting, he added.

Following the incident, garbage clearance from the nook and corner of Hailakandi town was adversely affected. It may be mentioned that the board owns the plot of land measuring 10 bighas since 1970.

A large number of people on Thursday protested the dumping of garbage of Hailakandi and Lala town in Kuchila village on the outskirts of Hailakani town. A truck owned by Hailakandi Municipal Board and used for carrying garbage was damaged. The concerned people alleged that the entire area had been polluted by the garbage when the entire state was reeling under a severe bout of Japanese Encephalitis.

The president of Matijuri-Paikan Gaon Panchayat Rajesh Roy said that the people are facing extreme hardship due to the nauseating stench emanating from the putrid garbage. He said that the area is surrounded by offices of gaon panchayat, veterinary, and two schools, besides human habitation.

He said that they will continue their movement till the dumping ground is not closed down by the municipal authorities. He alleged that they informed the matter to the district administration several times, but no action was taken. He urged the DC to visit the spot.
