Case against misuse of Latasil playground

By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, Nov 16 The Latasil Field Development Committee (LFDC), constituted with the residents of the Uzanbazar area here, filed a case at the Gauhati High Court (WPC/5880/2014), appealing against the use of the playground for activities other than sports.

The LFDC in a statement said that the committee, which was set up with veteran sportspersons and developers, has a constitution of its own. Accordingly, the playground has to be used for sporting events, with the exceptions being Durga Puja and Latasil Bihu celebrations.

A couple of years ago, the Assam Government had used the ground for Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations. The matter was taken to the Gauhati High Court and finally the State government agreed to shift the above celebrations from there.

The LFDC has expressed concern over the issue that the local administration is planning to grant permission to some organisations for holding cultural festivals on the Latasil playground. The Committee has also urged the local administration not to allow any organisation to hold cultural activities on the ground. The case was filed in the court on Saturday.
