Card holders not getting atta in Bongaigaon

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, June 24 - Atta (flour) meant for public distribution has not been given to ration card holder consumers by the dealers in Bongaigaon since the past few years, consumers have alleged.

Consumers having ration cards are getting only rice and kerosene oil from their dealers but not atta.

l get only rice and kerosene oil against my new priority card, my dealer does not give atta. When asked, he said atta was unavailable, said Rajani Devi, a 77-year old widow, of ward no. 23 in the town.

Another consumer, Sita Ray (70), a resident of Bakhrapara Part-2 in the town, said: "I have never seen atta in my dealers fair price shop. This widow also gets only rice and kerosene oil against her priority card (no.0487952).

When contacted, the dealers in the town said they have not been allotted atta from the flour mill owners. Mill owners pay some amount to these dealers instead of atta, they alleged.

Hence they have been unable to provide atta to the consumers, they admitted.

Three flour mills Atta Chakki Mill, M/s Janaki Enterprise and Bongaigaon Roller Flour Mill, which gets the highest quantity of wheat from the department are entrusted to supply atta to 107 dealers in the town against the wheat they get from the Food and Civil Supply department.

But these three flour mills have allegedly not been supplying atta to the dealers since long and for which bona fide consumers have been deprived of their due quantity of atta.

According to the district Food and Civil Supply department, the Government supply of wheat to these three mills is still regular with fluctuating quantity. So, why these flour mills have failed to distribute atta to the dealers is a matter of inquiry, the local citizens demanded.

However, the district Food and Civil Supply department has expressed its ignorance of the matter and assured of looking into the allegation.
